I am working on my wife's 93 XLT. I know the general feeling of the forum is to replace automatic hubs with manuals. This option may be exercised at a later date. Right now I just want to clean out the grease that the stupid dealer's mechanic put in my automatic hubs, they totally freewheel now. I prefer to do a thorough cleaning by disassembling them. To do this I would like to have an exploded view of the hub components. I have the Ford Service Manuals and they do not show the hubs nor do they discuss servicing them. I have searched the Internet for the diagram and have come up empty. Does anyone know where I can get such a diagram? Another option would be a picture by picture breakdown of actual hub disassembly/reassembly. Your help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

hope this helps

I have a 92 xlt should be the same auto hubs

Thanks chew1966. Any chance you have an exploded view of the Hublock Assembly shown in your diagram?

Me too!

I could really use help with the hubs too. I have a 92 with auto hubs and have got a set of used hubs (one good and one bad) from a great guy on this site. I removed the tire and the hublock assembly, there was no keeper on the lug bolt. I could not see anything that looked like it needed fixed. No ground up gears or nothing. Do I have to remove the snap ring and inspect the hublock assembly? Also do I have to remove the wheel retainer? Mine was full of grease, probably gotta clean that up too.
How do these things work? Does the shaft push out and engage the gears? Duh? Thanks for any info anyone can offer.

hope this is the one!!

I can help you, I have take auto hubs apart a few times. It is not hard, how far along are you.

If you want to take out the inner gear then look inside the hub, remove the snap ring at the bottum. Then turn it upside down and tap it on somthing hard 5 to 20 times. Just keep tapping it. Also, I am sure know not to soak the bearing in parts cleaner.

I think that should help. If you need to know more let me know.

Cleaning the bearings??

What do you clean the bearings with if not parts cleaner. Gasoline?? Also, why not, what would it do?
Thanks for the info.
Rick

The bearing is a sealed bearing, the use of solvent will dry the bearing out and it will fail. However, it is possible to replace. Keep in mind the bearing will have to be pressed in. You can buy a new bearing at this site for a few dollars. Remove the old bearing and get the numbers from it.

Good luck
