Automatic shifting problem?

It was a cold morning this morning and my 91 explorer wasnt shifting out of first gear. When i manually shifted into 2nd it hesitently went in and was buking real bad. I wouldnt go into drive easily either. Stoped checked the fluid and all was good. Started off and the same thing. While in drive it wouldnt go into second unless manually shifted to second and then to drive. The truck took about 15 miles before overdrive and all else workded fine. Are these early signs of a worn tranny??? Thanks, Rob

There is a modulator that controls shifting on the older Ex transmissions. Search for Transmission Modulator, or hard shifting and you will find tons of threads about your problem and the eventual fixes.
