I scanned my vehicle with Forscan and found no trouble codes in the PCM.
I also replaced the transfer case fluid and ATF, but the AWD is still off with a wrench sign.
I'm confused about the difference between a transfer case and a PTU. Online searches suggest they are the same, so I purchased Mercon LV fluid as recommended for transfer cases. However, I've now learned that Explorers also have a PTU that requires a different fluid/gear oil.
Did I make a mistake by using Mercon LV in my PTU/transfer case? The information online is conflicting, and even other people seem unsure about the difference between these two components.
Welcome to the Forum.
The Owner's Manual states they are the same thing. The PTU's capacity is only 0.53L or 18 oz. Here is what your manual shows.
I think it's probably wise to drain the PTU and refill with the proper fluid.
As for the AWD Off message, that is also covered in your manual and usually seems to be tied to an overheating engine.
The Ford Wrench Light is a dashboard indicator used exclusively on Ford vehicles. This light can be triggered whenever your onboard diagnostics II(OBD II) system detects a throttle control system or transmission-related problem.
You should check for possible stored trouble codes.
