Axle Damper/Stabilizre 1999 explorer 4x4

Hello

I bought a Monroe SC2958 Magnum Axle Shaft Damper today,i took it out the box to check it out.Am i supose to be able to push this thing in and out by hand or is this defected?

My new one was extremely stiff.
 






I know nothing about this kind of stuff,is why im askin. Im not sayin its easy to push in/out,i guess i was thinkin it would be MUCH harder to push.It seems its going to b under MUCH MUCH more pressure on the ride then i can do pushing and pulling it with my hands,but could b wrong.

When u say extremely stiff,like straning ball?

My 18 year old original equipment one is difficult to move.

Let us know what difference it makes after you fit it.
 






Mine was fairly easy to move in and out but it was also original and probably shot. I would expect it to work just like a shock. Should be able to move it by hand but not without really trying. That being said I threw mine in the garbage can and didn't bother replacing it. Especially on lifted trucks they really should get pulled anyway which both of mine are.

Shocks are velocity sensitive. They react to rates of change in speed and direction(acceleration, or in math this is referred to as dv/dt, rate of change of velocity(direction dependent, not speed)/per unit time. Lets see how fast you can make it move pulling it back and forth rapidly.
 






Take the old one off and compare effort to move both. If there is no difference, there is no improvement except as 96eb96 mentioned, you have to consider velocity of movement.
 






The new/old are about the same hardness pushin/pullin but the old one would kinda be catching,like it was going bad.
 






You could go to a local auto parts store that carries them, or even a different brand, have them pull one out of the box to compare in case your random sample is defective.

Once you have that comparison, if it were me I'd go ahead and replace it since you noticed some kind of catching, and because of the age, wear on seals and (not knowing where you're located but around here with winter snow/salt) rust.

Then again it's not a critical suspension component like a strut... having a front strut spring mount (different vehicle) break away from rust so the front end is collapsed onto the tire is NOT FUN when driving. Fortunately I was only going ~20MPH at the time instead of 65MPH on a curve on the interstate.
 






just installed a new KYB from Rock Auto last night. It was extremely firm.
I had a whale of a time pushing it in, and it had no return on its own.
I had to compact it to get it in there, then pull it down to get the bottom
bolt in. It was very stiff! as a comparison the old 198,000 mi. stocker
I can shake up and down like a can of nuts. And the ride to work was
noticeably better.
