back hatch glass will not open

the back hatch glass on my 1999 explorer will not unlock, the lift gate Does unlock. Any help on how to kix would be greatly appreciated

pull the back hatch panel off and see whats wrong, is the lock not comeing up or down? or is it the actual handle itself froze up? they are known for the handles themselve going bad, either way your going to have to crawl int he back and take the interior panel off of the hatch and figure it out from there, there is 2 screws in the hand strap and some of those push in fasteners all around it, it will come off with the door shut i had to do mine and the handle itself was froze so i took it off kept shooting wd40 to it while i had it in a vise and kept tapping it left and right with a rubber malet and free'd it up now it works with no problem.

thanks for the reply . The hatch works it is the hatch glass that will not open when I press the button . Any tips on that. thanks

Soak the cylinder lock and door jam with PB blaster or WD40 or equivelent.

From the inside, before removing the whole panel, you will see a plastic cap above the locking mechanism, if you are careful, you can activate the latch to open it, do it, and then lube the hell out of it with penetrating oil as ford green said, also spray inside the key cylinder and around the button, activate the latch with the screwdriver a few times, as well as the button, the try it. If it works, that was your issue, just add some thicker oil or lithium grease or something that will last and won't affect the plastic inside. If it stays the same, well, then take the panel off and have a go at it, there are some plastic rod connectors that fail all the time, also the armature around the button, etc.
