Tranny is back together and working flawlessly except for 1 thing. In all gears aside from park, my reverse lights are staying on. Both electrical connectors are attached to the tranny as well.

Neither the ATSG manual nor the chiltons repair guide reference any reverse switch in the tranny, yet something definitely is not right. I have cleaned the contacts and checked everything out on the outside of the tranny and everything seems great.

Where in the tranny is the reverse switch so I can check it out to see what I did wrong.

Thanks

Some simple investigating. If i disconnect the ground neutral switch assy, the light does not come on. I am going to drop the pan and check the way the switch works. Either its detenting too often, or not enough, or I reassembled something near the linkage in the pan incorrectly.

I will report back with my findings later.

I dont get it.

By default, the switch is pushed in in park and reverse. After neutral and beyond, there is nothing to push the switch in, so it pops out.

In the in position, the reverse light is off.

in the out position, the light is on.

This doesnt make sense to me.

Anyone have an idea?

Ok, i am pretty sure its the switch..

here are a couple pics of the switch..

in

out

The first pic is how the switch is just sitting there. In this position, if you hook it up to the connector, the backup lights come on.

Second pic I have taken a pair of pliers and pulled the tip of the switch out a bit. In this position, when hooked up to the electrical connector, the lights are off. If you look closely at the switch, you can see it is dented.. I must have done this when removing it or something.. Anyway, I think this is impeding the true travel of the switch. I have ordered another for $39.99 from autozone and it will be in tomorrow. I'll post my findings then.

I'll be interested to hear what you find out.

New switch did the trick

OLD VS NEW

The old one was damaged enough so that the plunger could not travel the entire length of the switch. Put the new one in and used a 16 mm socket to tighten it and it works perfectly now.

Just to reiterate.

The neutral safety switch is also the switch that controls the backup or reverse lights. If it gets damaged, it might work as a neutral safety switch still, but if your lights stay on after rebuilding your tranny, chances are either the switch is not screwed in far enough, or, its damaged and cannot release fully.

Good to know Slag... thanks. Another piece of collective knowledge. I thought it was 19mm on the socket, maybe it changed from a 92?

actually, 19 sounds right..
