I have a 96 XLT with the 4.0 OHV. I am getting a intermittent rough idle but only for a few moments (about 10-15 seconds) at start up. When I am giving it gas it continues to run rough similar to a dead miss. I am not having any codes but I did some data streaming and the fuel trim is running at 24% and the MAF is reading at 4.9 g/s (not sure what g/s means). I unfortunately forgot to look at my temperature sensor readings. The O2 sensors are fluctuating so they seem to be operating properly. I will read the temperature sensors when I get to work tomorrow and post the results. I am not sure if this is an issue or not but I have only been getting 14 MPG for the past month. I only know this because I recently changed the gear in the odometer (it has been broken since I got it 3 years ago). Is this an average mpg?

I changed the fuel pump about 2.5 years ago but have not checked fuel pressure. I changed the fuel filter last year but have probably only put about 10k miles on it. I do regular fuel induction cleanings 2-3 times a year. But nothing else has been changed. I am leaning towards the MAF sensor because I know it is a common problem with Fords but it has never giving me a problem with starting OR stalling. I am wanting to fix this problem first then plan on changing fuel filter, plugs, wires, MAF,maybe the coil, so I am willing to knock this out one at a time to find out but would like to narrow it down. If you guys have any suggestions please point me that way, I have access to a Snap On Verus so diagnostics should not be a problem.

Thanks guys!!!

Im having the same issue, and i also get it while driving sometimes, but it isnt all the time, i was going to try and clean my MAF sensor, but im trying to find out if others are having the same issue. Keep me updated and what you thing the issue is.

I have this same problem about 6 times a year. My Explorer is a daily driver and averages about 40-60 miles a day so this has not bugged me much. Usually restarting it solves the problem though last time it did it took 3 restarts to get it to run right. So I'm watching this also.
