Bad IAC valve?

Hi folks, I'm new to the board. We own a 2000 Explorer XLS 4x4 with 133,000 km. I've been reading about this "IAC valve" and I'm wondering if this sounds like the culprit in this situation:

Not always (and this is why it's hard to diagnose the problem), but lately - and a few months last year - whenever we would do a cold start in the morning or after sitting all day in the parking lot at work, our Explorer would start fine but then the idle would quickly drop to zero and the engine would shut off. We would wait about 10 seconds then try to start it but all that would happen is the engine sounded like it wanted to start but wouldn't. So, not wanting to damage the starter or anything, we would again wait a few seconds then put our foot on the gas while turning the key and it would start. It would only stay started as long as we had one foot on the gas - essentially "two footing" it to where we needed to go. Usually, once the Explorer had been driven for the first time on any given day, it would start and run fine for the rest of the day.

Sometimes the problem would correct itself after a short distance and sometimes it wouldn't at all. It is very intermittant and every time we bring it to our mechanic, it never repeats the problem. (It did it once but by the time he got around to looking at it, it had fixed itself again.) He cleaned out the throttle body and that seemed to help for a few days, but here we are again. Would a tune up be in order soon? Apparantly, it has all the orginal wires and parts and at around 160k km I know it's due.

Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.
 






Sounds "almost" like the same problem I had with our Explorer, a new IAC took care of it.

The symptoms you describe are characteristic of IAC sticking. It and the other intake components are susceptible to deposit formation particularly if the fuel being used does not have an adequate detergent package. Replace the IAC and add a can of BG products 44K or Chevron Techron to a full tank of gas then run till near empty before refilling to clean the rest of the components. The PEA additive in both products is very effective in removing engine deposits without the harmful effects of the petroleum naphtha based additives.
