Just wondering when you know it's time to replace them. I bought my truck1.5 yrs and almost 40k miles ago and they told me there was "some" wear.

I just replaced one of my hubs and you could tell there was plenty of play in the tire. Now there is little to nothing for play in the tire, but with going to 33s I'm planning on doing it anyway.

How do I know if they need to be replaced?

I also have a steering problem that I think it caused by whatever the steering shaft goes through in the firewall, but someone mentioned that a frozen ball-joint may have caused a rack and pinion problem.

About 6-8 mo ago I did have a squeek, but haven't heard it in a while. Ball-joints "look" good, but don't really know what that is. I do have the new ones to compaire, but that doesn't help me.

You look for more than 1/32" movement when you try to move the wheel:
