Hi All,

Here we go with another question...

I bought a 1992 XLT (4wd, autolock hubs) about a month ago...been running great, I really like it (my first truck!). And I'm new to the forum boards, so be gentle;)

I tried out the 4wd (Hi), and it engaged (I think), lights on the dash came on, and it drove OK until I made a slow turn...bang, bang...real loud...but on the straightaway, it's OK...hmmm (I say that alot).

So, I disengage the 4wd at about 10 mph, and this really strange sound that is hard to describe...almost like a mechanical pressure release type sound that lasted about 5 seconds...and then no noise. I back up about 20 feet to unlock the hubs (I think that's the right procedure) and the vehicle runs fine.

So, any thoughts on the above, OR any thoughts in general about what I should have checked, known issues (I DID do a search on this forum, and I gather that the autolock hubs are a POS), etc.

I do some minor maintenance (plugs, filters, oil) on all my vehicles, so if's something minor that I can do, great, but no dropping transmissions, etc.

Thanks!

If you were running the 4X4 on a hard surface, you will definately hear noises, especially when turning. Try to avoid using the 4x4 on any hard packed surface of pavement. The banging is the release of axle wind up caused by the difference in the turning radius btween the wheels. On a slippery surface, the tire spins easier and the stress on the driveline is lessened.

Thanks TPLYNCH, appreciate it...I know you're NOT supposed to run 4wd on hard surfaces, I just wanted to check it out, as I just got it...but that noise was awful loud!!!...and what was that really strange sound that is hard to describe...almost like a mechanical pressure release type sound that lasted about 5 seconds???

Thanks.

WHY THE H*LL WOULD YOU BUY A CORVETTE WHEN YOU HAVE A MUSTANG DO YOU KNOW WHAT YOU CAN DO WITH THOSE THINGS ? (JK) I have this with mine, if it was not on pavement Im not sure, that stuff works the h*ll out of the 4wd system

LOL...that Mustang DOES rock...bought it new, still runs great...standard, easy mods (UD pulley's, K&N, bump the timing, Flowmasters)...uses a little oil, but at 140k, no problem...just do routine maint., and use synthetic oil in ALL my vehicles (after break-in)...I swear by that stuff.
