When I started up my X to put it in the garage tonight, it made a strange barking noise the moment I started up. It didn't last long, but I immediately shut the engine off and tried to replicate the noise.

I don't think it was the starter...I've heard that on different cars before and plus the noise didn't seem to be that far under the vehicle. The bad part is I don't know if I'll be able to replicate the noise again.

The only thing I can think of it being caused by a dry start due to my Fram oil filter. Then again, I can't recall ever having this happen, so what's your best guess? I'm only about a thousand miles into my Mobil 1 oil change. Could the drainback valve or something within my filter cause a dry start?

I live in a college town about three hours from home. I'll be going back home on the 25th, so hopefully I can last until then to switch out to a different filter. I'll probably go Motorcraft or just anything besides fram. Who makes Motorcraft? Wix? How are Baldwin filters? How much oil can I expect to lose on a cold engine if I just drop the filter alone?

Thanks for your help everyone...this makes me very nervous.

Kars,
I believe that Purolator makes Motorcraft filters.

I've always run either Motorcraft or Purolator Pure One filters.

Mobil One and Wix filters are supposed to be great, too.

Don't know anything about Baldwin.

If you drop that POS Fram figure, oh, 1/3 of a quart in the filter, 1/4 quart leaking out. So...that's 1/2 quart. I'd say that's about right.

No, you won't drain your oil pan out by dropping the filter. You'll just make a mess to clean up!!!
