Hi All,

02 Explorer 4x4 XLT, 5r55W - 90,000 miles

I was having a 3rd gear shifting issue that I diagnosed as a Pressure Control Solenoid problem. (Thanks to this forum). I had error codes read locally and all symptons pointed to the Pressure Control Solenoid module. Last night I replaced the module, no issues, fluid and pan were really clean...messy job but went very smooth. When I started the job, I disconnected the battery. When I finished the job I reconnected the battery and started the truck. The truck started, but in 4x4 LOW. The "push buttons" for changing to 4x4 high and 4x4 Auto didn't seem to respond. I checked all fuses and they were ok. I decided to disconnect the battery again to see if I could clear the problem. This time when I started the truck, the 4x4 Low light on the dash was off and the 4x4 low button light was off. Good??? Well even though the lights were off, I am still stuck in 4x4 Low. Any Ideas? And is there any way to manually shift into 4x4 Auto?

Thanks in Advance,

Jeff

UPDATE: I decided to replace the 4x4CM (Control Module). Success!

As I reported before, upon reconnecting the battery the explorer powered up in 4x4 Low. I installed the new module, the 4x4 LOW light came on and I was able to switch back to 4x4 Auto.

I bought the part locally for $220. Here is some interesting Ford part number information:
Failed Part - 1L2Z-7H473-AG
New Part - Sticker on Box - 1L2Z-7E453-A
Part Number on new part - 1L24-7H417-AL
The box was labeled different than the part. I was a little reluctant to try it... but it worked. If anyone has info on this part number they may want to comment.

I did a lot of digging on the web regarding this problem and this is a huge issue with 02 Explorers. If you cycle the battery... good luck. There are several other post on this site that discuss this same issue... I just did not find them before creating my own post.

This is a DIY job. The module is located directly behind the glove box, mounted vertically to the fan housing. A few screws and a couple connectors and you are done.

Way to go. Thanks for following up.
