For a long time I have problems with my explorer, the four wheel drive doesnt work.
My first problem was the 4 Low, it never work. Time later start my problems with 4 high. I search help everywhere and finally comes to find your forum and the invaluate pages of Dr Bob. I downloaded his tips and studied it a lot of times.
Conclusion: My 4wd Control board was death.
I search here for a new one, the dealer (paraguay) said that it cost 800 USD.
The last week finally I found a engine 2.9 l v6 from a Bronco II, with his transmission,(c5) transfer (1350 BW) THE MOTOR AND HIS CONTROL BOARD.
Yesterday I change my 4wd motor and the control board.
Noises, lights and it finally work!!!!... for five minutes, then start my problems it works, and stop.
Today I cut the brown wire of the motor ,( the ground ) and it start to work OK
AND STILL WORKING!!!!!!, mysystem work with out ground and I dont understand how!!!
CAN IT CAUSE SOME PROBLEMS TO ME?, LIKE BURN MY 4WD CONTROL BOARD
IS THIS NORMAL?
Thanks and excuse by very very bad english

so?:( :( :( :(

so far no bad side effect on the brown wire mod. i suggest you leave it as is if it still is working for you. and your english isn't bad at all. its better than mine and your spelling is better than aldive. ;)

Well first off you cannot do the "brown wire mod" on a first gen, i don't know what the brown wire does on a 1354 but you probably dont want to be cutting it. have you tried cleaning your shift motor? alot of times that is what causes the transfer case to work improperly. I'm not sure how anything is working with out the ground but it's possible the 1350 computer you have is not completely compatible with your 1354 but i kind of doubt it. the 1350 and 1354 are very similiar transfercases and i would imagine the computer from one would work for another. Your best bet is trying to clean the motor, do a search and you'll find all the info you need.

thanks guys.
I asked here in this forum and I ask again in forum www.therangerstation the about if or not interchangeable the control board and motor of the 1350 and 1354 BW. Here nobody reply to me but in the rangerstation forum some people replay saying that there is no problem and they are interchangeable. If they know or not.... IS A MISTERY FOR ME :)
By the way I clean to times my motor and compares my ol motor and wires with the new one. I didn founded any diferences betwen one and the other

me again... I have my two transfers (the 1350 and the 1354 and they have the ground brown wire. They use the same system. I was looking inside the control board . The new one and the old one; they are identical. , the distribution are the same, name of pieces relays and others are the same... everything is identical Some chips have the same numberof identification!
In one word they are IDENTICAL
....I think....

The brown wire is NOT a ground, but rather a 12v source to the magnetic clutch inside the T-case. Its purpose is to slip the front drive shaft until it gets up to speed with the rear shaft (at which point it powers off, locking the front shaft)....

He's talking about the Borg Warner 1350 and 1354, they do not have a Torque On Demand Clutch. Cutting any wires in the wiring harness of the transfer case is not a good idea if you don't know what they do. It's possible the brown wire on a 1354 is the ground but with out looking at the schematics i wouldnt be able to tell you. :)

Leford now that i think about it i have heard of people using 1350 computers with 1354s. I hope it all works out for you.

Thanks Guys...
I dont know HOW, but my vehicle have computer from a BW 1350 ( it comes from a Ford Bronco II) a 1354 of the explorer and they still working JUST FINE.
Even whit out the brown wire.
