I would really like to mount neon lights under the dash board of my 98 Ford Explorer Sport. Today when I went out there I noticed a black box that takes up about half of the room under the dash. This is on the passenger's side. Does anyone know what it is for? Is it important? There is really no room to work if it remains.

just a shot in the dark but Im guessing your reffering to the ducting for your climate control.... Would you really remove this "black box" just to install some lights?

Yeah, I would say Climate control.
You could...
1. Remove ducting
2. Cut light sized hole in plastic
3. Buy some clear plexi glass and cut to size (if not a big bigger) of the hole
4. Mount light inside hole
5. Wire accordingly.
6. Install Clear PlexiGlass
7. Seal to keep air in ducts

:D Just one thing (er...7?) you could do to make it work.

Just make sure it's ducting and not some electrical stuff. In my wife's Escort that is were the blower motor is. Wouldn't want to cut into that. Good luck.

It's the air plenum for the climate controls, just as mentioned. I wouldn't cut into it, because there is a baffle in there (the "blend door") that moves around and putting something in there could affect its operation.
