Never expected that since I really had no clue something like that was impending. Went to start it and after about 6 compression strokes it sounded like something got trapped between the starter and the flex plate. Then, click-click-click-click-click. I'm like WTH? Tried again. She bucked against herself again but continued to light up, and run like garbage.; one cylinder down. Had 4 miles to go to get home so took it easy; smoking all the way.

Got home and dug out Auto Enginuity. Cylinder contribution had #1 at nearly 0%. Cylinder #5 plug came out drenched in gasoline. The smoke was incredible and very acrid smelling. Couldn't do much with it today but more formal leak-down testing and other diags on the docket for tomorrow. Wondering what the smartest options would be. I'm sure she's hurt pretty badly........ Retrofit my old 1.9 TDi Jetta engine LOL. Crazy 5.0 HO? Hahaha.

Looking into 4.0 rebuild stuff now.......

A 5.0 would be cool.

From what you have diagnosed so far, I think there are good odds that it isn't a candidate for a rebuild. Or are you looking into rebuilt engines?

Let's leave Mothers' out of this. Most wouldn't understand anyway. (You'd be surprised what people have done with TDi diesels!)

I'm not sure if it is or isn't yet. Typically OHC engines don't tolerate valve-piston strikes very well. That said, I have put many back together. Really, it depends how bad it's hurt. If it's rebuild-able, I'm game. If not a rebuild-able candidate. If I could find a really decent detailed write-up on a 4.6L retrofit I'd really be inclined to try that. I've heard it's cake. It's hurt for sure, but maybe not dead yet......

It you can find a good donor vehicle to swap parts from, it might not be all that difficult to do. The good thing about the 4.6L 2V engines is they are good for 250k plus miles with good maintenance. This leaves open doing an engine swap from a 100k-150k mile donor vehicle and still getting a lot of miles from it.

Is this a reference to my signature?

Well, there's harnesses, wiring deviations etc that'll likely have to be managed. I can't turn this into a month-long project. First thing is to see how bad it's hurt (and how it happened). I am scanning the interweb for a decent swap how-to. Who knows. It may just be a matter of grabbing the 4.6 PCM harness and finding it's plug-n-play with all the instrument panel stuff, etc.....

Whoops! My bad! I didn't immediately recognize that as your sig. Humble apologies kind sir!.
I was wondering if there was another message that got deleted that was directed towards. No worries, if you do swap another engine in, a TDI would be cool. The VW 3.0 has been swapped and the issues getting it to run standalone have been sorted out.

The 1.9 PD TDi and the 2.0 have as well. There are a couple of companies that make all sorts of adapter hardware for the conversion too, but DANG is it PRICY!!!!!! Miss my TDi - 44 MPG, Tuned and turbo-d to scary levels. It would be fun in the Exploder!

Now this might just be worthwhile..... :D

I got a 4.5L V6 powerstroke diesel for a Jeep project. The 440 lb/ft of torque would probably move the explorer very well. All the V8 diesel tuning can be done to the 6 cylinder if you need more.

If I could get it to fit under the hood. Been writing my own tunes for a 6.0 PSD and the TDi for several years. Never really got a chance to get started on the Exploder yet. The F-250 will turn 13.2 sec @ 102-ish quarter mile times. More than once that's scared the bejeebers out of me ! :O

It's be fitted into a 1st gen Ranger so it'll fit a 3rd gen Explorer with ease.

Which trans? 2x4, 4x4? You selling it or building on it? :D

I've got a Jeep Liberty CRD that the engine jumped timing so I pulled that engine to replace with the V6 powerstroke. It will be 4 wheel drive. I just figured out today how to mate a T56 to it which I will change the extension housing to mount a transfer case. I want the 6 speed wide ratio so I can have the engine under 1800 rpm at 75 mph. These engines can be found dirt cheap in Ford LCF or the international version trucks.

Nice project! I'm married to an automatic in this truck and the 5R110W as is in my F-250 will be wayyyyy too large. No need for a 2nd 4x4 either. That said, there may be potential here. Need to take a closer look at that engine......

It has the SBF pattern, so an automatic like the 6R80 would work. I need a lot more overdrive which is why I'm going with the manual.
