Blew her up last night :(......

Well, there's harnesses, wiring deviations etc that'll likely have to be managed. I can't turn this into a month-long project. First thing is to see how bad it's hurt (and how it happened). I am scanning the interweb for a decent swap how-to. Who knows. It may just be a matter of grabbing the 4.6 PCM harness and finding it's plug-n-play with all the instrument panel stuff, etc.....
I referenced a donor vehicle because this should be the easiest way to do the swap. Especially so if the engine runs before starting.

Wish I could find a weight of the thing. I'm assuming that it follows Ford's other 'nomenclature' in that the "80" symbolizes 800 Lb Ft capacity. More than enough for the Explorer.

All in all, it will be far cheaper to fix the 4.0L and write a couple good tune files or it..... :)

What's your budget to fix the 4.0?

Cheap as possible I guess. I have a good friend/pool player/racing bud that works in an auto machine shop. He'll do me right. Just need to find out how bad it's hurt. Truck really isn't worth all that much right now but than I find myself currently out of work, so I don't have a lot of options. The F-250 needs a starter so that may be the short-term solution.......

How many miles on it? I'm wondering if some valves kissed the pistons?

About 188K, and I'm sure they did. No clue this was coming - except for an occasional couple of ticks on start-up after a long cold soak.

I would consider what you could buy for the cost of the repair plus selling your 2005. This might get you into a 3rd gen V8.

Ok this is dubious. Although it was not a 'true' compression test, just a dry test on a cold engine. The @&~!)@ red wasps ran me out of there before I could really get into a true warm dry/wet test, but cold and dry was as follows......
1: 205
2: 190
3: 205
4: 185
5: 200
6: 195

I'm going out after dark and kill me some red wasps so I can do this properly but even under these conditions, I didn't expect this at all........ (decent SnapOn gauge set too)

What could I sell it for. Labor (sans machine work) is furnished by me. Heck - I don't know. Still burning from all those red wasps. Can't think straight...... LMAO

Looks like your engine didn't go critical mass. Does the 05 show fuel pressure with the diagnostic tool?

30-65 depending.... IS IT POSSIBLE??? for a piston to strike an out-of-time-valve in one of these things, in such a way that it could seize the cranking part of starting ( remember, sounded like someone shoved a piece of Hicory between the starter and flex-plate) and NOT do any measurable damage?

I've been in Hi-Po automotive for years. I've bent pushrods, dropped valves WHOLESALE into an engine spinning 8k-9k RPM. When that happens they STOP! NOW! - sometimes theatrically....

This is becoming strange.......

Usually when valves kiss pistons with this motor, the entire bank is done. You could pull all the spark plugs and look for marks on the pistons. It is an interference engine so if contact was made, there would be some damage.

Funny... plugs 1 & 2 were drenched. 3 was bone-dry. (Send me back to the ol' push-rod days LOL. Bend one - put in a new one!) LMAO

Killing red hornets tonight. Not living through all that again. 15 mins with a low temp, high pressure washer at 8-9PM usually fixes that.

Beyond that, I might learn something....

At this point, you'll have to rule out the ignition and fuel system, then electrical for the pcm. Someone more knowledgeable than me would know if there's known issues with the engine harness like the 4th gen.

'05 will be alive Wednesday with 60 Fass PSI - unless I misunderstand you......

At this juncture I'm stumped. I'm Ford EEC-IV, EEC-V, OBD-II certified, and have a few dangling ASE certs..... but have been in the UNIX/Linux C/C++ world for too many years. I'm missing something stupid, but what...?
