So I finally have a garage, and I've made time to start breaking down the 4.0 that had a crank, no start..
So far I'm down to the fuel rails and exposed the intake valves.. none move while engine is cranked and I have fluid on the tops of 5 valves..
I've taken pictures of every connection, electrical, and vacuum.. I also took pictures of parts coming off to make my own "rebuild manual"

**My question is this.. being a timing issue, and the valves are not moving, which chain should be the cause??**

If the heads, or other parts are salvageable I am considering a rebuild, that way all the parts on the engine will be new..

More than likely your engine is toast. A rebuild probably is not economically feasible at this point. Once a chain breaks the valve hit the pistons ruining all kinds of stuff. If you want to keep it on the road, consider an engine replacement.

I agree with Koda.

Your best option sounds like a reman engine.

I at least want to see what's going on, it's the perfect opportunity for the 5.0 swap.. Depending on the amount of carnage I'll likely go with a salvage "get-r-goin" engine until this time next year when the inspection runs out..
I was ultimately hoping for a personal rebuild, that way I know what was done and at what extent.. I'm very mistrust in when it comes to anyone putting fingers on my vehicles..

To answer your question, if you are looking at the valves, you are also looking at the cam timing chains, so, if they are not moving, then the jackshaft chain or sprocket is no good.

I know the rebuild isn't the best choice option, however I'm on the fence with my projects..
Let me briefly explain.. our '01 ex is running, but will need a timing chain overhaul very shortly in her future, the guide is busted, and she is ticking, but the first stages..
We have the 01' st with a blown engine
The inspection on the ex is about to run out and I have a choice between which gets fixed and which becomes the project..
I'm itching to drive our st sooooo bad that I was thinking about putting her on the road and working on her as I go..
Of course the ex would be getting the sas/soa while she is down until the st is out of inspection

First picture after intake removal..

Thirty pictures later I am only at this point..

If anyone needs a tear down guide or photos, let me know..

I know now I'll be replacing this engine, and saving what I remove as spare/ mock up parts..

Good luck with whatever you decide. I saw where you posted on my 5.0 thread. I decided to drop the 5.0 in over keeping up with the 4.0, obviously. I sold the 4.0 to someone who was in the same boat as you.

Mine ST is for sale too, if you want to consider it. :)

More than likely it's gonna be a temporary salvage yard 4.0 until i can get a donor for the 5.0 swap..

Found this under drivers side valve cover..

I didn't blow it up, wife bought it as is knowing I wanted a project..

Made some progress today..
