a4ld tranny

I took a trip last night to one of the buttes above the city i live in. On the way up my engine got hot and my tranny felt sluggish. The temp needle got to about 3/4 and the coolant filled the recovery tank when i stoped. (I started it back up, turned the heat on and let it cool down)

On the way down it went great temp didnt even hit the middle. When i got back on the pavement and went to reverse to disengage the hubs i noticed it felt really sluggish. Unlocked the hubs, threw it in drive and went down the highway. eventually i threw it into OD I felt the TC lockup engange but it wouldnt shift into the OD gear and my RPMs where about 500-700 higher than they ussualy are for going 65ish and in od. Finnaly i get to my friends house, drop him off and go to back outta the drive way and it wouldnt even engage into reverse i ended up coasting outta the drive way.

Finnaly I get in it to go to work and i "kinda" had reverse, i had to rev it to 3k rps to move about 2 mph. I get to work and try to back outta the spot i parked in just to check and it wouldnt even move. Get in it to go home and i get the 'kinda' reverse again.

I get home and I made an apointment with aamco since i really dont have the time to spend learning to rebuild it nor do i want to find other ways to make my 10 mile commute to work for a month. (they also offer 12 same as cash finnacing) Also going to have them add a oil cooler to it.
And to get the obious out of the way... It's fluid is fine, just had a filter and fluid change a month ago and the levels are still good as of a hour ago. Modulator was just replaced.

My question's are....

What could be wrong with it?

How much can i expect to pay for a rebuild?

How long does it take "the pros"?

I just paid $1800+tax last week. It took 2 days.

Just Got Mine Back Today

Cost $1800 plus tax. Local shop with good reputation did the rebuild themselves rather than install someone else's tranny. Two year, 24,000 warranty. World of difference in performance. My original '92 trans had only 125,000 on it but most of those miles were in the Middle East where the high temps had to have an effect. Didn't think anything was wrong since it seemed to shift and function just fine, but recently it started leaking fluid when hot. New pump seals didn't solve the problem and I was nearly stranded in the mountains so decided to fix the problem once and for all. Also, my mileage has been going down for the past year or so but the new engine runs great and there were no apparent reasons for the poor mileage. Now, the rig moves right out with much less gas pedal being used. Plan on a long fishing trip tomorrow back to where I was nearly stranded a week ago. Oh, the rebuild took 3 days.

Why don't you have AAMCO order you a rebuild from Phoenix Remanufactured Transmissions in Arizona at (623)936-1500. They have an excellent reputation and all their trans are dyno tested, not checked with air pressure. They are about 725.00 + core charge, and shipping is 100 to 350 to the shop of your choice. They also carry up to a three year warranty.

First Long Trip with New Transmission

Took my '92 Sport up to the mountains this weekend for some fly fishing and to give the rebuilt tranny a good run on some gravel/dirt roads. Ran great (fishing sucked though) and my mileage went from around 13 mpg before the rebuild up to 16 mpg. No leaks anywhere and all seems good at this point. Will be taking the rig back in two weeks for a free checkup but if things continue as well as this weekend, I think I'll be happy.
