Out of the blue, both keyfobs stopped working. I did the programming procedure on both, the car reacts to the 8 key turns, and cycle the locks. But the fobs still do nothing. Of course I replaced the batteries.
Any ideas ?

I read somewhere about RAT module or something to be disconnected for an hour ? Where is it on Explorers ?

Thanks

PS: After more research, it's called RAP or VSM module. I see some posts on that.

Very odd as I never heard of that happening with any vehicle. Once programmed its their for ever unless changed. If unplugging does it would be odd as a dead battery would cause the info to be lost as well. I can't see that as your resolution but who knows. No details on you build, year etc and I know there is a difference in systems.

This has happened to me and I found out it was the chip in the car itself that had messed up. After getting new key fobs and still nothing I just unhooked the battery and reconnected it which solved the problem for me. I have not had any problems since.

well if you due for a emission test this winter I would not disconnect the battery. The computer will not bring all emission systems to the the required READY state and fail upon testing. Cold weather and condition don't allow several systems to reset the code that they are working. I got caught on that in the 2002 Explorer when I had to replace the alternator. Normally I don't disconnect the battery when working on things like that. But this time I did and no amount of driving would bring it to a passing state.

Solved, and I feel dumb. Actually, both key fobs were just bad, unusual but it happened.

I took a fob from my other explorer (07) and was able to program it to my 06. Then I found an old fob in my garage and I was also able to program it to the 06.

I left the battery unplugged for a night before that, but that did nothing for the original 2 fobs, they were just "expired" :)

Oh wow, you must be hard on them. Short of breaking one I never seen one fail from use. Anyway you had a cheap way out.

Great to hear. If you only use your fobs to open, keep ALL the lock cylinders free by lubricating them occasionally with Lock-Ease, etc. GL

Having the same issue with a 2011 when I replaced the battery for the remote start. Seem to something to the module????tried reprogram ... locks would cycle but nothing happened to the key fob...any ideas?

Had this problem with my 2015 Explorer Limited, neither key fob would work intermittently....changed batteries, reset Sync, nothing worked for any length of time. Took it to the dealer and it actually acted up while they had it! They replaced a receiver module, BB5Z-15K602-L and it appears to have fixed the problem, at least for the last two months. Apparently the module is the tire pressure monitor module. Hope this helps....apparently this happens a lot, as they had to contact Ford engineering to help with the fix.
