Well I look out the kitchen door today and see that my brake lights are on!

Nobody is in the truck, it’s locked and the keys are in the house.

I go outside, unlock the truck and press the brake pedal, when I release it the brake lights go off.

They have stayed off since.

Should I just replace the brake light switch on the pedal?

I’m not exactly sure how the brake pedal works in Explorers, but on my other car the spring that pulls the brake pedal back up to the off position was broken and caused the same symptom you described. You could also try to spray some electrical contact cleaner/ lubricant into the switch. Good Luck!
