Breaking in a new engine

Alright my new vehicle has about 85 miles on it and I am wondering what some of you recommend for properly breaking in a new vehicle. The manual doesn't say anything about this but from what I have heard on other forums is that I shouldn't go over 55 miles per hour and I shouldn't let the engine rev over 3k. Is this correct? Is there anything else I need to do? Do I need to worry about breaking in the transmission properly as well? If so how would I do this?

Not sure about truck engines, but over on the altima forums ive seen nothing but people racing on their engines hard and not breaking them in at all. Theres a bunch of kids i know too that didnt break their engines in, they just sort of drove them hard as soon as they got them and whatnot. now im not sure if this is good or not, but i guess they were saying something along the lines of that these new engines really don't need break in periods. can somebody clarify? I too am confused by this.

Every owner's manual I have ever read specifies a break in period. Although specifics vary, the basics are pretty universal. No full throttle starts for the first 1000 miles. Do not drive at a steady speed for the first 1000 miles. ( vary your speed if on the highway). No stomping on the brakes for the first 1000 miles. These are all easy things to do, yet some people insist it is not neccessary and get all bent out of shape about it. I have no earthly idea why.

My girlfreind just bought a new Toyata Camery SE and they told her you dont need to break these motors in

what did the dealer say about it? just go by what the dealer says. hey, if it isn't broken in correctly then they'll give you a new motor

Gotta put my .02 in on this subject. I worked in a speed shop building motors for years, when we broke motors in on the bench we would set it to run around 4,000-5,000 RM and let run for around 2hrs. That way we and the customer could be confident in our product. Now personnally, if I bought a new vehicle I would want to run it through the paces and identify any problems right off the bat. My advice, Break em' like your gonna run em'

my moms sebring break in period is 300 miles. seemed kinda small to me, but i looked in the manual and yup, there it was. 300miles

Well... From breaking in 3 different 4.0L engines on my own truck, I recommend that you run the engine at moderate speeds and rpms. Some engines you could easily just run the piss out of them right off the start, but I would not do this with the 4.0L. The biggest issue with this engine is giving the seals plenty of time to seat well. Blowing the rpms up to 4500 is not going to be the best way to do this... Many of the engine remanufacturers reccomend that you run the engine with regular oil(not synthetic) for about 2000-3000 for a good break in period. After the break in period make sure to change the filter and oil.
