My 94 EXR (144k) shifted great untill it over heated. It responded to all foward drive gears slowly. I got it home(changed out the fan cluch witch made it over heat) changed out the burnt fluid and put in a new filter (yes the o rings are in.) This did nothing at first to fix it when its cold - warm ran great. Then after babing it in the morning for a week , all the drive gears worked great. The fluid still looks good no burnt smell. One problem still, when I put it eny foward gear it takes a few min, to go.... reverse always works. Today 3 weeks later & about 2k miles I let it sit in park running for 20 min. it only got to about 1/2 on the temp gage. Now there is no forward drive at all. Rev still works great. Sounds like somethings gummed up in there. Time for a shower??? Do I drop the pan and cleen somthing????What????Got more time than money or I'd have a 2004 not a 94....

I'm trying to think of things that you could do without removing the trannie... because once you do I am gonna say REBUILD it. What would help in so many of these situations is some presssure readings.... can you buy or have access to a transmission pressure gauge? (I'm thinking your forward drum seals and hence forward clutch are shot).... but there are other possibilities...few, but some. Frankly at 144K you probably cannot band aid this one. Regardless of the problem.

Thanks for the reply

Thanks Glacier991, I've seen alot of post from you about the a4ld. When I slide under this thing it looks like like its 1 year old w/ 20k on it. I did'nt want to condem the tranny with its well cared for 1 owner past. Ex socker moms 2wd kid carryer I got it in a auction 4 mounths ago for $1950 and put 10k miles on it. So I dont want to dump more money than I paid for it back into it....maybe...not sure yet. Brian made a post about the same prob w/ someone "maybe a stuck valve body"

Well, that IS a possibility....here's the list of possible problems from the FORD factory manual for the condition of "No Forward Engagement"

Improper fluid level

Misadjusted shift linkage

Improper pressures - low main control pressure

Filter plugged

Main Control valve body - bolts too loose/tight or valve dirty/sticking

Pump damaged or leaking

Forward clutch support sealing rings leaking

Forward clutch assembly damaged/burnt or leaking. Checkball in cylinder leaking/leaking piston rings

Take your pick. You COULD remove the valve body, disassemble and clean it and put it back in if you like.... I wish I could say that would do it. I suppose it might, and I cannot say it won't.... but my money is on the last two items. I hope I'm mistaken, and it's just an educated guess anyway. You can DIY rebuild this trannie.

Thanks for the help but No, dont have the work space to rebuild.
