As you know, it all depends on your budget and what you intend to use it for. Also, you need to take into consideration if its gonna need to haul people (2-door vs. 4-door), a daily driver (no crazy mods to keep reliablity in check), importance of mpg or more power for towing (V-6 vs. V-8), for street or off road (4x2 vs. 4x4).

I don't know if this helped or just confused you some more... :D

thanks X-factor:
well i just needed to know if there was a major problem "s" with that particular model

I'm new here too, but in my searching most people have said the V8 engine and tranny are more reliable than the V6. However, the gas mileage sucks on the V8...well at least mine with my 12-13 MPG :(

with a few mods and not driving crazy you should be able to get about 15-17 mpg out of a v8

i would personally go with a v8...bigger and better transmission plus more power

Sorry about that. I completely misread your question. If that Explorer has a manual transmission, replacing it if it does go bad would be a lot cheaper to fix or replace than an automatic.

Which engine does it have? The 5.0 L and the 4.0 L OHV don't have many complaints about them. The 4.0 L SOHC also seems to be a good engine, if the two owner notification programs have been taken care of. One involves the lower intake manifold gaskets and the other involves the timing chain cam and tensioners.

The V8 is more reliable than the V6, but the gas mileages of the two are very similar. On a recent trip I got around 17 mpg. BTW, I have a V8 w/ AWD.

The only problems I can think of with that year and model are:

1) If its an SOHC, make sure its had all its recalls done. All the early year SOHCs seem to have either cam tensioner problems or intake gasket problems, etc.

2) Make sure the tranny has had a happy 67k life. Servicing the tranny is the best way to keep the V6 trannies alive and kicking.

3) Radio Head Unit Display. This is more of an annoying problem but the display on the H/Us are known to go dead. Everything will work but the display.

Thats all I can think of now. Good luck with finding something and keep your eyes peeled for a V8! :D

He's looking at a 5-speed manual so it HAS to be the 4.0 OHV. Not any big complaints with the 4.0 OHV, but it has a nasty lifter ticking issue, and can leak oil sometimes. Overall it's a good, stout, reliable engine, but I recommend the SOHC motor myself :D
