Bypassing or hot wiring engine to run

I just bought a wrecked 99 Explorer. I need to try and get the engine running. Don't need to drive, just run and idle to hear it and make sure it's good before pulling. Is there anyway to bypass the anti theft just to make it run??

What about disconnecting the module for the anti theft? and maybe jumper the harness to look like it is good??

find the key OR find a thief... I don't think anyone has any "easy way" to get around the system... outside of "reprogramming things".

Don't Need a Key , You Sir need A Locksmith To Make You An Ignition Key ! , Most Locksmiths have (Master) Keys That Start Certain Year Model vehicles , I Would Call around And See What They Offer In Your Area !, Good Luck And Welcome To The Site !!

True but it will cost a bit... cause it then also has to be programmed. IF your truck is "normal" (ie. key for door is key for ignition), just take one of your door locks off... cart it over to the lock smith, they can then "match" the tumblers appropriately with a key and IF they have a programmer, can then program it.... IF you are lucky, you might get away for a "steal" of less $200... cause of course, the smithy would have to make a "house call" to your truck to complete the programming.

Budwich, I certainly appreciate your expertise and answers. But please tell me, as I own a 96 XLT, would it be possible to "hot wire" through the actual ignition switch? So far, I haven't had the need to do that. Oh, how I wish things weren't so damn complicated with vehicles now a days.

If your 96 is like mine, then you likely don't have an anti-theft system (not sure when they became a standard option... 97-98?), then you have a "dumb key" and as such, your vehicle don't care if you use a key or not, it will start if you "fudge" the ignition switch... basically giving "run" voltages to those systems that require it (ie. on position) and "start burst" to the starter. I believe in 99's had a chipped key with a system... could be wrong as to when that happen. IF not, then he certainly can just "fudge" the ignition.

Of course, you would want to unlock the steering before trying to drive away ...

Mine has a "theft light" that comes on, but no lights or horn chirp. And the key has no chip in it. When I bought it, it had an aftermarket alarm system, which I promptly removed. Thanks for your reply.

The passive system might have a further requirement in the ignition switch for a ground towards the module... I am not sure.

Further "investigation" of the "pre-chip" system indicates that there is a "tamper sensor" in the ignition switch so that "playing" with the switch will cause an "issue" with the theft system similar to the "fancier chip design" (ie. disabling operation). Of course, the system isn't quite as sophisticated as the newer one and can be potentially worked around with some difficulty (which I am sure some less than noble car borrowers have found).
