noise from the front end and similar feeling through the brake pedal? I recently had a brake job done at my local Lincoln Mercury dealer on my wife's 2004 Mercury Sable wagon (35K miles). From the day we brought it home, we heard and felt said noise/feeling. Initially, I suspected the pads were not OEM or the discs were not trued or the calipers were rubbing. Took it back to them for assessment and they said a rubber grommet in the master cylinder is going bad and a new master cylinder would be about $385. Hmmm. Seems rather coincidental with their brake job. What do you all think? Possible?

Pull the front wheels off, check the heat shields, and the caliper bolts. Did they only touch the front brakes? How is your parking brake?

They replaced the rear pads too. Not sure if they're discs or drums back there. The parking brake works fine.

Well, the answer is no. The grinding in my brakes was not caused by a bad master cylinder. At the recommendation of my local LM dealer, I went ahead and paid them almost $400 to get the master cylinder replaced on my wife's 2004 Mercury Sable wagon and there is no difference. Besides the original problem, is there anything I can do to recoup my costs for the new master cylinder? Like complaining to the service manager or Ford directly? Will that do anything besides cause bad feelings?

I also have the grinding sound - but I have not tried to get it fixed yet. Every time I drop it off, the mechanic says he doesn't hear anything. I just looked into the ABS and cruise control issues (which I also have) and will certainly give that a try, but I'm not sure if they are related to the grinding sound.

Try the two caliper bracket bolts. The two bigger bolts that hold the bracket to the truck. The one that has to be removed to change rotors. These are bad to get loose if they have been taken off before. When they get loose it makes all kinds of noises.
