I have a 94 Explorer XLT automatic 4x4. Whenever it's running, there is a strong odor of gas that seems to come from under the hood. It runs fine, but the smell is really strong. What could it be? Also, when I accelerate, there is a loud rattling sound that comes from underneath. I have checked the u joints, and there is no play in them at all. Thoughts?

if you dont see any leaks, check the fuel pressure regulator, it could have a bad diaphram in it letting vaccum suck up some fuel, which would reburn anyway. and make sure your injector seals are good. you can sometimes test those with carb cleaner while the engine is running. make sure the engine is cold though. just spray each injector and if it makes the engine change idle speed then your seals are bad. those are easy to change if you have a couple hours. anyone care to tell me im wrong?

Another common cause of a fuel smell under the hood (especially if there are no other symptoms) is a clogged EVAP hose, or a CANP (CANnister Purge) solenoid that is not opening.

If you pull codes, do you get a KOEO 565 (indicating a fault in the CANP circuit)? The output state test (see my notes on pulling EEC-IV codes thread) and a hand vacuum pump can be a useful way to tell if the solenoid can work.
