Been a lurker for years, but now I need help.

I think I am the only person in the world that is replacing the Front Rotors/Pads on my 1996 Ford Explorer XLT 2WD 4.0 V6.

I am having trouble removing the Front Rotors.

I am not sure if I am supposed to remove the axle nut or not. - From what I've seen on most, it is not necessary... however, they have all been on 4WD and 5.0 V8's.

I've whacked it with a hammer for 20 mins and it won't budge. Also, the bearings look like they have plenty of grease... would skipping the repack be okay?

Advice is very much appreciated.

Spindle nut has to come off, whacking is not so nice on the bearing clean them inspect them and make sure they are ok and repack them and re assemble.
Real spindles on this particular model no throwaway unit bearings.
