Yesterday morning, I was on my way to work and my 04 4.0 decided to shut down and I lost all power. First, I saw my lights dim and the check charging system light came on, then right after, I noticed I had no power and the check engine, low oil pressure, and high temp low oil lights lit up my dash. I coasted down into someone's driveway. I checked under the hood and everything looked fine. I started it up and it has ran fine since. I replaced my bad alternator this past Friday, so I doubt it's that. I have also read something about the fuel pumps having a blink in them and i turned the key to the on position and off ten times and she primed up every time. I have read about the CPS sensor going bad. Also, I happened to have a cop behind me that morning and the speed limit was 40 mph so I am sure I set my cruise to that. My buddy has a 04 4.6 said his in the past has shut down when he sets his cruise at 40 mph or under. My 96 4.0 would do something similar and it ended being the fuel relay was bad, but it looks like these have a different fuel relay system than the 96. Any advice or comments?

You changed your alternator last Friday, that is probably it. A lot of times, problems arise from the last thing that a person touches. Sounds like a loose or shorted connection at your alternator. Recheck that.

Is the alternator new or a rebuild? It could be that too.

I would not chase the fuel path or the cruise. If the engine just died, then maybe fuel. But you had a charging fault/warning light and dimming of lights. It's something electrical.

I rechecked that and the connections are good.

My 05 did the samething last week. I had the cruise on and then the engine just stopped. It restarted right way but it was weird. I was doing about 31mph. It acted up again this past Saturday. I have a new alternator because my just died about 2 weeks ago. They battery is a year old and my fuel filter was just changed. I do have exhaust leat that might be part of the problem because it can cause the O2 sensors and cat montors to run lean or rich. I might replace the trottle body because the tps sensor is part of the throttle body which I have sold a ton since almost all ford cars and trucks use a drive by wire now. The other thing is the fuel pump. I do know that Ford had a ton of problems with the fuel pumps in the Explorer's. I have replaced mine before. Plus after it did die I lost 60 miles and a quater tank of gas according to the gauge. I change about 2 days later. So I am thinking with the sluggish acceleration until about 30mph then takes of the exhaust leak, bad fuel pressure from the pump, and the tps or throttle body maybe being messed up this should fix it when I place them all.
