So on my 98 sport tgat I just bought I notice that there is a bunch of creaking and rattling going on back there. Nothing is loose in the storage compartment. What have you done to fix this?

On my 4 door XLT the jack handle and extension rod are secured on two plastic clips fastened underneath the rear seat. Perhaps there is a similar setup on the Sport? Maybe they have come loose are flopping around?

Check the rear wiper motor assembly.

Nothing is loose. It's distinctly plastic sounding.

Typical older vehicle problem, you need someone back there poking and pushing on the plastic cover panels while you're driving to see which panels are doing it (could be several) then start spraying silicone spray into gaps, and foam tape in gaps where the silicone spray won't get the job done, OR pull the panel off and try to alter the shape VERY slightly with a heat gun and some pressure until cooled.
