98 explorer 4.0 xlt
Hi guys i have recently purchased a 98 explorer 4.0 xlt for a good price. No fobs came with the car. The cental locking doesnt work if i unlock via any door, only if the key is in ignition and turned to atleast accessories and i press any of the 3 buttons in the car. Did any of the explorers come with this kind of setup (find hard to believe with 6cd changer, electric seats and mirrors) or did they all have propper central locking?

Also the blower fan speed switch has been bypassed always blows full speed cant turn it off or slow down. so i know for sure some electics have been rewired/bridged out. This doesnt bother me much in darwin australia very humid conditions.

It's impossible to say as someone has modified your electrical system in the past. The door locks should have power all the time, not just with the key ON.

As far as your blower motor, it may be that your blower resistor (assuming you have the manual HVAC controls) is partially burnt out, or perhaps it's a further symptom of a previous owner monkeying around. Who knows.

Yeah i would imagine one or more resistor coil is blown, so they bypassed the switch and resistor.

Iv managed to find some wiring diagrams for central locking so will look into it. Can you think why they may have changed the locking wiring from always live (hot), to live when key is turned in ignition? Any common faults with the explorer this may have remedied?

I doubt the PO changed the central locking power feed on purpose. It seems he somehow hooked the power feed up to HOT with key ON instead of HOT all the time. Look at a wiring diagram and see what the PO changed. Once you locate the feed wire you could just tie it into the battery + or some other HOT at all times feed (like the cig lighter). I'd probably just go straight from the battery + with an appropriate AMP in-line fuse.
