Being that I drive both auto and manual, today I tried to shift while driving my explorer. I shifted from D to R like an idiot.

luckily all that happened is the truck cut out. There was no gear crunching or bangs/knocks etc...

can anyone give any insight into if this could cause any issues?

The truck was fine once I'd stopped, engaged P, and restarted the truck.

just a tad concerned if it could cause any problems?

Did the check engine , or the O.D. light come on ? If not, go have the truck scanned if you have access to a scanner. Just in case. So after the miss shift any other trouble ? If not you should be fine, this is a computer controlled power train and it's some what smarter than the operator. Engineers do like to play what if games just like Bubba saying "watch this!!"Only the engineers try to take out the human element in some systems to avoid accidents and of course lawsuits.

my CEL was already on so unsure of any new codes untill I get the scanner tomorrow.

no O/D light and no other trouble at all, shifting is and running are still smooth and normal.

The fact it just cut out, I'm kind of assuming the system has a fail safe of some sort to stop us trashing the box in the event of such stupidity.

I'd go ahead and have the codes scanned and make any repairs. Some times not fixing the reason the code is triggered is worse than repairing the problem. With the 1995 for example when the O.D. light blinks people freak out , however some codes pop up because the EEC IV found something else instead of the transmission . A quick scan with the reader and the code goes away...Note you have to know the codes and the different types of codes. CM for example is continuous memory with is mostly a hard fault code(not based on conditions but what failed, wiring for example) .

I did the same in a late 90's Taurus I had, had a friend who told me to throw it in neutral when coasting to a stop, or going downhill to save gas (Back in the penny-pinching high school days), and that shifter was like mush, knocked it right into reverse on accident while doing around 45mph, same thing as yours though, the engine died, and once I put it in park, and restarted it, I noticed nothing out of the ordinary. No lights, codes, etc.

same thing, just pulled to a stop put it in park and everytjing is sweet. gonna pull codes tomorrow and see if anything changed since I last pulled them. I'm still working in this p1762 issue so that keeps being thrown.
