Gage

I hear you now ..

O.k. Gage so i just remove the silencer from under the filter box and enlarge the hole . What size hole did you go with on the bottom of your air box after removing the silencer ? Do you have a tube straight from the air box now or is it just without the silencer ?

Thanks again Gage.

P.s. your truck looks amazing !!!!

Guggy thank you!

J. Kennedy Now that you put it that way I would think that you would be right. Common sense DUH!

Ford and others thought if you put a cone shaped object to have the air input would quiet the air coming in. It does work put it kills simple HP. My "X" has just the removal of the air silencer. It takes the input from 1.5" or so to about 3" oval. It does help!

After i did both of the instals...i noticed that there is sometimes a humming noise...and i traced back to my air filter. I dont know why it happens...and it only happens sometimes. But it has something to do with the hole i cut out and the tube i put in there...any suggestions?

I am now curious about this "air silencer" too. Does the 4.0 OHV have one or is it restricted to the SOHC?? I have the OHV, so does my airbox have this silencer?? If so, where is it and is it removable??

Pretty sure we don't have a silencer...

I have looked around in there and thought about it a lot, and I don't see any way to do a cold air tube on my 91-94 vintage Explorer. It's just too crowded in there! Now if I relocated the battery...that's seems to be the only way..

so we dont have an air silencer R.B.??

I was looking around too, it really is crowded in there! In the lower half of the airbox, there's some sort of plastic cover with a triangular shape, then it turns into a tube and runs up to the front under the pass. headlight and just stops!! Do you know what that is. I was thinking it was some sort of air induction but wasnt really sure.

Do you know what we can do to our "vintage" Exploreres to make them run a little better? I got the K&N like you and didnt see a difference.

Matt

The 95+ OHV intake is set up a little different than the 91-94 intake. Does anyone know if a 95-96 truck with the OHV has an air silencer that can be removed???

UMM

I dunno sorry!

Stephen,
The '95 with the conical air fileter has an induction tube that runs down into the passenger side fender well. I never pulled mine out to take a look, but there is probably a sliencer on it (it looks like a trumpet shaped tube). Your best bet is to pull the air filter housing and see if you can modify the induction tube.

Todd, thank you very much. I may take a look at it this weekend and see what I can see or do about it. It would seem logical that it would have a silencer to me, so I'll take a look if I have time and post what I find.

Any body else know for sure before I rip my airbox out??

I just read this thread and ill look at my 00 sport tommorow. I had a 98 mustang before this and this was the first mod i did. I put in a kn and set up a cold air induction by actually not removing the silencer (which was rubber), but by cutting the opening from 1.5" to about 3" and then stuffing an 18" white hard plastic plumbing tube into it. The pipe fit perfectly in the fenderwall. So it sucked air through a 3" opening away from the engine. I hope this can work with the explorer.

I went ahead and did it. Ive got a 00 4.0 SOHC and it was a lot harder to do this than on my mustang. THe mustang has a rubber tube that you just pull out with barely any force. On the explorer i had to unhook the MAF and then take the air assembly cover off and the air filter too (which by the way i substituted with my first mod-KN filter). Then inside there is this hard plastic tube (silenvcer) which is a bit tricky to get out. You have to pull it out of the air assembly toward the lights and then fidget with it until you can pull it up and out of the car. What I did was stick a screwdriver inbetween the tube (the side outside of the airbox) and the airbox (when you look in there you'll know what i mean). and sort of just pushed it back and firth until it popped out. Then I sort of moved some of the cables around until i could get it out of the assembly. I guess you could also take out the assembly but i didnt want to do that.

PS-once you take the air filter out, the silencer is the only thing in there, you cant miss it, if you have it. With the silencer out and the KN in I did feel a difference. I was able to get higher RPM readings before the automatic shifted. I felt like i gained more HP, and the noise was nice too.

I removed the tube on my '01 SportTrac yesterday, and it was really easy. The engine does seem to rev a bit more freely. I'll have to see if there is any MPG gain. I'll probably also try to rig a replacement tube as well.

Yep thats what i did to!

I also put a tie wrap on my gass cable today. I did some checking and it did have slack and did not open the butterfly all the way. It does now not much gain but there is something. I also changed my shift points on the trany by moveing the cable next to the TB. It also shifts a little harder. Its and old AOD mustang trick.

I know this is an old thread and if there are newer ones please refer me.

My question is can these 2 mods, the tieing the gas pedal and air intake thing work for the '93?

I would guess the gas pedal would. Am I reading this right, do I just take the wire that runs from the pedal and tie it a little shorter? What about this tranny cable? Do i have one or is this just something with manuals?

What about the air intake thing. The one thing I do that I'm sure would work would be to just cut holes in the lower portion of the box. But what about this redirecting where the air is comming from. Can I do this? What is the difference between SOHC and OHV? Which do I have?

What about the air silencer. Do I have one? I think someone said the older models didnt, was this comfermed?

Also what other cheap methods are there on improving throttle response and HP? Are there other threads anywhere?

Box o ?

You better have the OHV 4.0

What you do is take off the air intake and have a friend mash the gas to the floor and see if the butterfly opens all the way. If it does not then you may be able to do the gas mod.

Has far as the tranny, Do this at you own risk. It could hurt MPG and if your tranny if it is old it may not like the shifting harder. It only works on autos. You should have something like this. It has a c clip, Pull it out and see if you can pull the cable a bit. "Mark where the factory had it" so if you do not like it you can put it back!!!!!!

SOHC as the cam on top of the head like a honda or other newer car. Your 4.0 has the cam in the block about 8" above the crank. It uses rocker arms and push rods to move the valves up and down.

A SOHC getts rid of the rocker arm and push rods.

That is all i know about the OHV 4.0 hope it helps!
