oil pressure & coolant gauges act weird during first 3 miles of driving. any ideas?

2000 explorer xlt 4x4. base v6 engine. 6 months old.
here's what's happening...

everytime i start the car after it's been off for a few hours and i begin driving, the check gauge light is on. the oil pressure gauge stays at the lowest setting (L). the coolant gauge also stays at lowest setting (C).

the gauges remain the same until driving for about 3 miles. then the coolant gauge begins moving to the normal position and the oil pressure gauge acts slightly erratic (movement-wise) but settles in the normal halfway setting. with this, the check light engine light goes off.

i also noticed that when i start the vehicle, a little bit of water drips from the exhaust pipe opening.

i had my first oil change at 5000 miles. i just had my 2nd one today at 8700. the vast majority of my driving is highway miles.

has anyone had these gauge problems with the check gauge light on?? anyone have any ideas why this is happening?

thanks,
Tony
