I've noticed in the past couple days that my check guage light comes on briefly and then shuts off. When it comes on, my oil pressure drops all the way down to "L". I'm sure this can't be good. Can anyone help? Is this a computer issue? Or maybe my oil pump going bad?

im not sure about the 3rd gen exploreres, but i know for certain that the 91-01 models had a dumby oil pressure guage that didnt read exact pressure. as long as the sending unit was reading a normal range of presure the guage read normal. first thing you might want to look at is the oil pressure sending unit, it might be the problem.

Good advice. Same thing was happening with my 2002 4.0L V6 Eddie Bauer with 63,000 miles - the oil pressure gauge would sometimes fall to zero upon startup and the oil warning light/charm would come on.

I fixed this by replacing the oil pressure sending switch located on the drivers side front engine block. You must remove the drivers side wheel and go in through the front part of the wheel well, unless you are a circus contortionist in which case you don't have to remove the wheel. The new part cost $17 from the Ford dealer.

Thanks to both of you for your responses. The error code stated that it is the sensor switch which seems like a cheap fix. As you mentioned Rumple, I was afraid that while the part is cheap, I wouldn't be able to get to it. THis works out good though because I need to replace my driver's side fornt wheel hub as well so I'll do both at the same time. Thanks again for your help.

oil pressure sending unit

I am having the oil light stay on all the time. Could this be the sending unit? And if so how do i chang it on a 91 4cyl 5 speed? he says it is the "J" motor.
