Recently wired_af asked about installing a Safari Bar on a '98 Sport in this thread here. Since he had contacted Westin, and they had told him that the Safari Bar would only work on the four door, and that same information was listed on the Westin website, I wrote this email to Westin Automotive:
I am a member of the Ford Explorer forum at www.explorerforum.com, and a question was recently asked about installing a Safari Bar on a '98 Explorer Sport. The member said that he had called Westin and was told that the Safari Bar would only work on the 4-door. I do not understand why he would be told this, and why your website states this. I bought (and installed) a Safari Bar on my '99 Explorer Sport about three years ago. At that time, it was not stated that it was only for the 4-door. In reality, there is no difference between the '96-00 Sport front end and the '96-01 4-door front end. I believe that the '96-00 Sport was omitted when the clarification was made that the mounting kit changed for the '01 Sport due to the redesign of the front end. I instructed the forum member that he could install the bar on his Sport by using the '96-01 4-door kit. If he had not known about the Explorer forum, Westin would have lost a sale due to incorrect application data. It would be in your best interest to review this matter, and correct it so you do not lose any sales to my fellow Explorer Sport owners.
Sincerely,
Doug F.
I received a reply from Westin today:
I would like to thank you for your clarification of our obvious mistake and believe for this to be an oversight on our end. I will verify with the Engineering Department to see what they can add before revising our website and catalogs (Which will be out later this year.) I agree with your model application configurations and will definitely pass this message on to the appropriate personnel.
Thank you,
