I just cleaned the IAC valve and MAF sensor with gumout and put it on about 15 minutes later it looked dry, disconnected the neg. battery cable. I started it up and now it howls. The only thing i can think of is i looked at the thread for cleaning it and they said also to clean the back screen well i would like to know is it the thing connected to the plug on the back of the cylinder or the thing that twists on the top, well either way i can't get either off can anyone fill me in on how to take either one that needs to be cleaned off, thanks. Please help big emergency

i dont think its hurtin anything for it to howl, mine did it for two months before i fixed it. So dont not go places because of it

yesh i reread the thread and the guy that posted it said that he cleaned his because it whistled and i cleaned mine because it was black inside and he said that his whistled worse for a day than it went away. So hopefully it will go away because it is loud, thanks.

If you clean it and then it makes noise you most likely need a new one. Sometimes cleaning helps, sometimes it doesn't.

My 96 Explorer is making a similar sound - where is the IAC valve located?

Many thanks, Dan

I swear Ford makes the $hittiest IACs out there

Here's the locale:

OK after driving tonight the whistle went away and everything is back to normal. The thread was right i guess it takes a long time for the IAC to dry or get used to being clean, i don't know, but just for record mine didn't whistle before i cleaned it and did after but went away after a few hours of driving around :)

Thanks for the info. My 96 seems to make the noise when the engine is hot, from doing about 5 - 10 mile of city driving.

Thanks, Dan

Yeah my IAC started howling yesterday for the first time in 135k. I cleaned it a few days ago. I just pulled the black cap off for the time being.

what does a new IAC cost? Just curious.

I bought mine for 62 bucks at Auto Zone, Ford wanted 95 (Imagine that).

For some reason, Autozone in my area doesn't carry an IAC.

hey Hartman which black cap did you pull off is it the thing that you can turn facing to the driver's side of the car (or the black nob facing you in the picture above)and if so how did you take it off when i tried it didn't want to budge and i stopped, i didn't want to break anything. Also for an iac valve try ebay, i can't trust it being new but it is WAY cheaper.

I'm talking about the cap shown in the pic above. Mine just pulled straight off. I'm not even sure what the function of the cap is, but it solved the problem for the time being.

about the cap....

My truck had the whistle / honing, so I popped the hood, pulled off the black cap, and the whistle / honing dissappeared. Not sure it's function, really.
Also, since the two appeared to be related, I started my truck once, and it was NOT whistling / honing so I popped the hood, and tried to induce the reaction by covering the hole. No luck.
