Recently when I start moving, I'll get one loud click or popping noise. Sounds like it may be from the rearend, but I reall y don't know. Has anyone ever had this or have any ideas?

Thanks

I think I've got the same thing you're talking about. Mine will do it after I shift out of reverse and into drive and move forward. Or, occasionally it will do it if I am stopped at a light and go forward after jumping off the line pretty fast. It's just one noise, and it's sort of a hollow, deep knock. I have no idea what it is.

I'm going in for transmission service on Saturday (had a rebuild one year ago) and I am planning to ask them about it.

it sounds like a u joint problem....

alright, let me know what they say.
thanks

how can I check the U-joint?
should there be any play in the driveshaft at the rear axle?

Talked to a mechanic that's been doing work for me. He thinks it's a U-joint problem too.

Would that be the U-joint at the front of the driveshaft?
BTW mine is 2 wd

I don't know enough about it to give you too many specifics.

I do know, however, that I had my rear U-joints replaced within the last year (checked my service history after I talked to the mechanic). So if I don't have any U-joints upfront, either the job was bad or my problem isn't a U-joint problem.

I am pretty sure that since yours is 2wd the U-joints are in the rear.

I think there is one on each end of the driveshaft. Anyone tell me how to check them?

hey i get the same thing in mine , kind of a heavy vibration also? It happens more in mine the more you have been driving it. I talked to a guy about it and he said it is the Limited slip gears just sticking a little bit. He said there is a speacial gear oil lube that you can buy to stop it, but it wont harm anything the way it is.

Ya, vibration around 65 that deives me nuts. I will probably be changing the diff fluid this weekend and I'll let you know if this helps anything.

Anyone have a suggestion on what type/ weight of gear oil to run, I do a lot of highway driving should I use a synthetic oil along w/ the LS additive?

I had a similar problem - turned out to be U joints. I had a mechanic do it...cost me a little over $100. No more noise and helped with vibrations a little, but not much.

If not the U-joints then mabye you are hearing, the buzz-buzz, creak creak, snap-snap of that DAMN A4LD POS allfulmatic!!! ( I hate automatics ! )

Jared,
Do not use synthetic with a L/S and L/S lube. They aren't compatible according to Auburn. I believ For dreccomends 85w-90 gear oil for the differential (5.3 pints?) plus about 3-4 oz's of L/S lube.

If you need to remove your diff cover, check for wear on your L/S clutch plates. It may be a good time to get the rebuild kit if you have a bunch of wear. The kit runs about $80 at Ford. Howver, it is a time-consuming job to pull the differntial out - give yourself 1/2 day. You won't need to change shims with the rebuild, so re-installing the L/S will be a breeze.

Thanks Jon,
Do any of the books have directions for checking/ removing/ or rebuilding the LS?

Jared,
I did a search on Google for an Auburn install - there are many choices. You may find something more specific if you want to rebuild yours. There isn't anything on gearing in the Haynes manual that I could find. I'll look for the link that I used to see if that helps...
