I have a 98 Eddie Bauer edition. V8 5.0. AWD. Not sure of the history on it. When I got it, the driver tire was flat and I was told it needed a boot.
We fixed the tire and it drove fine. One day while driving on the highway it all of a sudden made this noise like the tire was flat. I pulled over and the tire was fine but the ominous clunk was not. We got it home and tried to decipher the noise. First thing we changed was the transfer case chain and fluid. Also put A new u joint on the driveshaft along with a cv joint. The noise stopped for about two weeks and then came back. We then regreased the joint and changed the cv thing again. Also changed the transmission fluid. We've replaced the sway bar links, the inner and outer tie rods, the cv axles. The clunk is still there.
Any ideas?
