I've got a 2000 XLT and live in the Chicago area.

1 out of 10 times when I am in 4wd high and making a turn, I'll get a griding/stressing metal sound during the turn. I basically lose quite a bit of engine power and have to re-accellerate to recover.

It does not happen every time. Happens on snow/rain/ice/and even fairly dry conditions.

Any thoughts?

I have no need to drive in 4wd Low, so I don't know if it happens then, too.

Also, last note. The explorer only has 4000 miles on it.

Thanks!

I have no clue why in the world your brand new truck would do that, I think it is time to that warranty. Anyways where are you from the Chicagoland area. If you don't already know there is a bunch of us Northern Illinois/Chicagoland guys meeting up at Hooter's on Sunday. For some info check out this link, and if you want to come just post your name and stuff. I hope that we will see you there!

I had something similar that I took mine in to the dealer for, but they said they couldn't reproduce the problem. They did tell me that this noise (and slight jerking/loss of power) is normal if you are on a surface where the front wheels, while turning, are unable to "slip". It has something to do with the front diff and auto hubs. Anytime I want to reproduce it, I just put it in 4H and on a normal street/parking lot (dry, no ice) turn the wheel to the stop. All kinds of jerks and noise. They say this is normal. If I turn the wheel slightly off from the stop, the problem goes away...

Unless there is snow or ice you should not use 4x4 at all on dry hard concrete or pavement. The wheels need to be able to have some slip and on dry pavement that won't usually happen. That is probably why it is clunking. It could be your front driveline to but being so new I doubt it.

if this happens when ur steering wheel is turned fully or almost all the way to either the left or the right then that is ok. that is because unlike the awd system, the explorer's shift on the fly is pretty much made for straight and decent turns. so if u go to do a tight u turn or something then u will get that
