Just replaced my cooling fan and fan clutch this morning, thought I would pass some info on. After inspecting the fan I found several cracks, a couple that went clear across the blade. Also found that the clutch wasn't as tight as the new one. After a trip to ford, since nobody else had the fan, I found that now ford sells you a ten bladed fan as opposed to the nine blades on the original, also on the clutch box it states that each year a fan clutch loses 100 rpm's of rotation.Mine is a 93 with 174,000 miles so I'm sure it needed replacing, and replacing those parts may help others with explorers running hot. I didn't get to drive much today, but I could hear the fan more than I used to.
Just thought someone might be interested, if I hadn't seen a posting here concerning the fan, I probably never would have looked.

did your ex run hot before this? post results when you get some time to drive with the ac going too. and how much did all that cost you?

My ex never ran as hot as some others, on a `100 degree day it ran inbetween the "r" and the "m". Now it runs around the "n", price wise it is 37.00's for fan from ford, and 30.00's for clutch at advanced auto. For install it takes a one and seven sixtenths wrench to change, took about twenty minutes to change. Now when you accelerate you can here the fan upfront, I'm sure this would help all those out west.:D
