cooling problems

Remember this?

I ended up with a new radiator....and it finally solved the problem.

yea i remember taht, but wastn yours constantly running warm...mine funs fine around town and once up to speed, but its when i get on the gas to get up to crusing speeds on the interstate it gets warm then cools right back down.....

today i drained the fluid, pulled the t-stat (it was installed right) jsut for ***** and giggles i cut out the brass plug thing that was in the weep hole, thinking it could cause some air to get trapped there by the sender unit, and added over a galon of straight water and then pre-mix coolant so it definetly has enough water in the syster....didnt get a chance to take it out on the highway, but will tomorrow on my way to work.....lets all hope it goes well.

I know it won't solve anything but try running with out a thermostat and observe your temperature stuff... it should stay basically cool / cold the whole time. Might give you a clue if it doesn't.

ok...so i ended up taking to truck to a shop...they pluged tehir scan too into the computer and drove it up and down the interstate and said the temp never went any higher than 195...so all is evendently well with my truck excepf for a 12$ temp sensor for the idiot gauge in the cluster.........havent fixed the sensor yet..but plan too soon....jsut wanted to give a little closure to this thread.

My STOCK answers on over heating problems: (beside changing a radiator or water pump)

If you got the tools or access to the kit........pressure check the system.

While running and when the engine is off, make a visual check of the hoses for a hole, check for leaks at connections, a too soft hose may collapse. If it passed the pressure test, you should be OK.

Replace radiator cap........IF, you can't remember when it was last done........of more than a couple years since it was last changed. If it passed the pressure test, you should be OK.

Fan Clutch...............when cold (engine off) try spinning the fan....it should spin freely or with very little resistance. If it won't spin.....replace.

When hot (engine off) try spinning the fan........in some cases it will feel like it's, "locked up," or it will be like there is syrup/glue holding it back. Tougher to spin, than when it was cold. If so, It's OK. If, it spins like a top.....replace.

The below elec. tests are the, "cheap test methods"........there are more sophisticated tests with values, that can be run.

Test for the dash thermo gauge................disconnect the wire from the temp sender unit.........KOEO...........ground that wire.........it will peg the gauge on the hot side............disconnect from ground and it will return.

Sender unit.........if you suspect it..........replace, replacement is cheap.
