Okay guys I have a 99 Sport 4x4. Im wanting to get a trailer for my stang since its starting to be not streetable anymore and when I goto the track I dont want to have the fear of not being able to get home. Do you think the truck will be able to handle it. or is there a relitivly cheap way to beef up the rear suspension on it? Any help/links would be awsome.

Thanks
Mike

Don't see why not, people pull boats on a trailer, whats the difference.

Maybe some add a leafs may help.

Yes, you can to it fine...You might want to search for 4 door leafs, I know a lot of the sport guys use 4 door leaf springs on them...Also you will want a good frame mounted class III hitch, and an aux tranny cooler couldnt hurt...Good luck!

youre going to be pretty close to your max towing weight depending on what kind of trailer you use... so to second what vairking said, definitely a tranny cooler.

thanks guys could i just get one one those tranny coolers that pep boys sell?

look in your manual to see max trailer weight for your setup, then calculate it..if it is within your weight limit your fine. I towed a 2,100# Tandem axle trailer with my old 95 Explorer on it for about 8 hours total drivign time and my truck was pretty maxed out, but it made it. Just be sure you change your tranny fluid every 30,000 or SOONER and make sure you have an aux. tranny cooler (some have it stock) As the others have also said..frame mounted Class III or IV hitch is REQUIRED and trailer brakes are also required for that weight.
ALso make sure your tires are pumped up and you have a good spare...just in case.
Rear 4 door leaf packs will also help lessen the rear end sag you will get.
Good luck!

I'd try bulkparts.com. It's an online tranny shop that sells all types and sizes of coolers. Personally, I would get a stacked plate cooler, they create a smaller pressure drop.

You would definately need trailer brakes. The stang + trailer would be getting close to the weight of your Sport. No way your factory brakes could handle almost 2 times the weight.

My truck had a class V trailer hitch when we bought it.. Its rated at 6000lbs  .. I wonder what on earth this guy was towing with my Sport.

I put the Load Rite air leveling suspension on my Ex. Love it :D . It did not change the factory ride at all, but when you are hauling, just air it up till it sits level. I have the on-board compressor to, so you never have to worry about having an air compressor around. And wiring it up for the electric trailer brakes is a necessity. I pulled a heavy trailer one time without it, the next weekend I was installing the brake controller. Good Luck and let me know if you have any questions.;)

I would question your use. If your just towing it 20 miles once a month to the local drag track, I wouldn't worry about, but if your towing it every weekend across the state, you might want to invest in some upgrades, possible an older F250.

Like I say, people pull 20ft inboard/outboard boats with explorers, so I wouldn't worry to much about a mustang. I would probably get a tranny cooler and add-a-leafs to sit level.

A lot of good replies here. The only thing I would like to add is that if you are up there in weight (and you are) make sure the stang is loaded right. To far up front will tire you out and wear your X out fast. Good luck!

yeah...but also make sure your not too far back...or else you'll get major sway. i always prefer heavier tounge weight then a swaying trailer. When I towed my Explorer i used a U-haul car hauler trailer and pulled all the way forward and it seemed right. The tounge was definatly heavy (I was almost riding on the bump stops..only has a couple inches) But was able to sustain 60-65 on the highway and feel in comfortable. Also if you are buying a trailer and don;t want to worry about wiring up electric brakes, get a surge-brake trailer..thats what the U-haul one was and it seemed to work well. Only time it was a little scarey was stopping on a curve with 5" of snow under me...trailer started to push the Explorer sideways
Oh well....you live you learn...I just let off th ebrakes and the truck straightened out

Thanks for all the replies here. I thnk im goiing togo add a leaf over the air system. As far as how much towing it will only be a couple times a month and 2 hrs max one way.

I would look at the Helwig adjustable helpers before going with an add-a-leaf. I use them when pulling my 16' trailer with a B2 on it and they were exactly what I needed.

I went from 4"s of sag to 1" after installing the Helpers...

how about using a dolly instead of a trailer, that way some of the weight is rolling and it will be a lot less stress on the suspension and the car. But, if you do tow it on a trailer, get 4 door leaf pack, the 2 dr leaf packs will never be able to handle it.

Cant us a dolly because if I snap an axle or gernade the rear end im up ***** creek without a paddle.
