i noticed my 98 automatic 4wd explorer when slowing down to a stoplight/sign that it clunks into 1st? maybe not clunk but i can hear / slightly feel it. will that be an issue?

also i noticed sometimes my car doesnt start in park all the time, sometimes i have to put it into neutral to start it!! whats that all about? i noticed my cluster for PRND21 is not accurate and off.

Reverse is park. lol!

clunking could be a ton of stuff. good first place to check would be to put it in park - jump underneath and try to rotate the drive shafts (front and rear) if there is any obvious play it is a u-joint.

If you have to shift it into neutral to start the linkage had to be adjusted OR the wiring bulkhead may be loose - on the driverside of the transmission pan there is a square cluster/connector of wiring that goes into the transmission. be sure it is not damages and the linkage is also there - check for obvious looseness or damage.

There is a little black gear in a white bracket below the steering column. You can turn the gear to adjust the position of the Gear selection indicator. Also, not everyone who views has useful information to give. Better to mosey on about than give bad advice.
