Cracked flexplate

Would a cracked flexplate make a ticking sound in gear, but no noise when in park or neutral?

Well, heres an audio clip. This started happening shortly after my oil change today. Something tells me it isn't the flexplate

Note - I just did a routine oil change. Drained the old stuff, replaced the drain plug, swapped the filter. Double checked both to make sure they were tight. Then I filled it up with new 10w40 dino oil.

Ive never heard this sound before. I scoped both valve covers and the bottom end, but couldn't pinpoint anything.

I replaced the Jiffy Lube filter with a Mobil One M1-301.

I did fill it with oil before screwing it on.

**Also**

You'll hear me revv it to 3 grand about halfway through. It was done in neutral, not drive. In drive the horrible noise seems to lighten at about 900 rpm.

Some times you have to hit download and type the code, and then do it over again.

The only thing i can think of at this time is that your valves maybe tickin or maybe that filter is reacting like the Fram can do to your explorer and cause you not to have enough oil circulating when you first start it, but if that were the case ya should be able to hear it in (P) or (N) In gear the motor is working a little harder even if you are sittin still so whether that would make a difference with that not sure, but seems like oil issue if it suddenly started after changing your oil. You should start your truck and look under it and double check make sure it isn't leaking oil anywhere, if you have to put it in gear and press the parking brake (if it works) and try listening around the motor area esp. at the bottom end (oil pan area) see if its sounding from there.

I took the scope to it and probed all the likely areas, but didnt get a difinative answer.

Thats my only thoughts right now...I really aint sure of anything else except maybe something in the tranny but have my doubts bout it since it started after an oil change. Maybe in the morning when you first start it you'll hear it better and be able to figure where its comin from.

A broken (cracked) flex plate will cause issues upon starting. Figure.....the flex plate and ring gears and how it meshes with the teeth on the starter. That is how most flex plate issurs are discovered.

I'm sure this has NOTHING to do with your noise, but do you always run 10-40 in your engine? I thought 5-30 was correct, 10-30 at most?

I was running 5-30 previously.

10-40 shouldnt be an issue with 278,600 on it.

Well.....I couldn't get the sound file to work either.......so, thinking that the noise started after the oil change and being that you switched oil to a heavier weight.......perhaps, you should go back to the old oil weight? 5W-30.......it could be valve train noise.....hyd lifters? But, not being able to hear it.....I'm only taking a SWAG at it.

IF, you don't want to drain all that new oil.....you could add ATF (not more than a 1/2 qt...IMHO). The ATF will thin the oil out and the detergents in the ATF will (suppose to help) clean out the hyd lifters. ME.......I find it risky.......but, look here.......

the audio worked for me....the way it acts makes me think its not lifter noise...but its got the same kinda sound, just isn't lifter noise. point being, i dont think its coming from the motor, so you should be looking into the tranny

all i can say is ask glicier our resident transmission guy on here maybe he will know that sound
did u listen at trans ?? while some one else runs the trk for u if its in the engine id maybe guess a wrist pin if transmission maybe tourqe converter possibly just dumb luck that the noise has happened at the same time u did an oil change ) gd luck

The only reason that lifter sounds reasonable to me, is because it took 2-3 seconds to build pressure after the change. Once again, I did fill the filter, but maybe I didnt give it enough time to soak into the media.

Anyways, thats a sad lifter if thats whats making the noise. To be sure when Im scoping this thing, a lifter will make noise about mid block because the lifters and down with the cam right?
