 My mechanic told me he thought it wouldn't be good to just replaced the heads (2 of the heads were cracked) because if the heads were replaced, he's seen it happen too many times that within a a few months, they have to be replaced again and/or the block ends up getting messed up...anyway,

Option 1# - he found an engine from a '94 Explorer that has 67,000 miles on it - Price $900 + Labor $700

Option 2# - rebuild my engine (machine shop) it could run between $1400-$1800 depending on the condition of the heads.....

Of course, Option 1# sounds better, but I'm just wondering if the price(s) are right........

If you are going to replace/rebuild, why on earth would you want to put a used one back in. Definately dump idea 1.

Also, take a look at a new rebuilt motor.

Good luck.....

i agree with aldive
dont get a used engine put in. I would definitely go with rebuilding your old one or buying a factory rebuilt engine. It will save money in the long run.
That said if you are not planning on keeping the explorer till it completely dies then put the used one in. In my family we keep all our vehicles until they die so we dont skimp on things like this.

Simple.

If you plan to keep the truck only maybe a year or two, go with option #1.

If you plan to keep the truck for a long time, go with option #2.

rebuilt engine

Try reconditionedengines.com I found a 91 for $1199 delivered including the core pickup and shipping. I agree with above; a used engine invites the unknown...

I didn't buy the engine...

yet... :chug:

Engine decision

:bounce: Thanks for all you replied, you definitely gave me something to think about!

I do want to get a new SUV in another year, actually I'd say, this time next year, just can't do monthly car payments and high insurance for a new automobile right now. And I hear loud and clear what Al was saying about not wanting to replace the engine with a used one, that would not make sense.

I'm going to call my mechanic and look into getting a rebuilt/remanufactured one...who knows when I'm ready to get my SUV, I can trade in the Xplorer and get a little something towards the new automobile purchase.....thanks again for replying - I really appreciate all the responses!

warranty?

Will the place your getting the motor warranty the engine? The prices sound in line with me.
