I think this might be too far forward on the tech fringe but does anyone know a way that the car could create a wifi hotspot and then allow your friends to hookup to that and play their tunes through airplay?

Bluetooth is great but it's a pain to hookup the phones, switch off of my phone (primary) so they can play their tunes.

Anything so that I can play tunes from iPhones without having to plug them into the USB - that is horrible.

Thanks!

I realize this isn't exactly the answer you're looking for, but if bluetooth isn't a viable option, you can also use an audio Y cable that goes from male 3.5mm stereo plug to RCA: http://www.monoprice.com/products/subdepartment.asp?c_id=102&cp_id=10218&cs_id=1021804

You probably already knew that tho but figured I'd throw that out just in case.

Additional wireless solutions would be nice tho, I haven't tinkered much with the onboard networking stuff but I intend to as time permits. I'm not familiar with airplay, but even if you got that up and running, without the option to choose the onboard network as an entertainment source for playback through the speakers, I don't see a way for this to work.

Technically, you could do this.

You would have to have an airport express that you logged onto the network and then run an audio cable into the aux input in the front cubby from the airport. You would then have to get the iphones logged onto the network to find the airport express. You could power the airport with the 110 outlet behind the front seat. You'll end up with cables all over... So:

It would work a lot better to just run an audio cable from the headphone jack on the iphone. From my experience, this will actually be a less frustrating way to listen to your ipod through the MFT system anyway. Trying to navigate the ipod menu through MFT will make your head explode, if you can even get it to work at all. I can make mine stream music through bluetooth, but you can't control what is playing. It also sounds like crap.. because it's bluetooth.

See my other post about internet connectivity. The car doesn't seem to get any connection or information from the wifi hotspot. It's just basically an onboard router that serves no other purpose. Here you are with a fat 4G pipeline connected to your car and your car calls in on a dial up cellular modem to get info. Unbelievable.

So.. the short answer from your initial request, the car would have to be connected to that wifi signal, which it's not, to share music through the head unit. No, you can't really do what you're wanting to do.
