The illumination lighting on my cruise control switch have gone out. I tried purchasing a bulb but the dealer said I had to purchase the entire switch. About $70.00 ea. Anyone have any information if this is true? Or is there a bulb available for these switches? They are located on the steering wheel.

Thanks,

Rmax

I don't think you can change just the bulb. I'm sure that someone is going to correct me here, but I always change the switches.

Thank you for the info. Can I only purchase this item at dealer?

yeah thats funny guys the bulb can be taken out but good luck finding a replacement bulb ford told me the same thing so i just took out the old bulb and order some bulbs from MCmaster-carr and solder in new ones but they don`t have the green color to them like the old ones due to the green cover on the old ones but they light up perfect and thats how i fix mine

and the bulbs i used have long wire leads on them, i was able to use them on my light swtich that acutally is always on so you can see the sw. at night when the lights are off

Thank you all for the info. I believe I will order the bulb as you mentioned. Is the soldering a simple process onto the switch?
What is the website you used to order the bulb? Do you know a specific part number?

Thanks,

The following is from a thread that Robert posted several years ago regarding the cruise button lights and the headlight switch light....

Each switch gets one bulb. The cruise button lights are very easy to replace if you remove the air-bag and then pull the entire switch out. Start to finish is about 10 minutes. It is possible to replace the bulb by prying off the rubber cover and then popping the circuit board out but getting things back together correctly (especially the rubber switch cover) took more time and cussing than just removing the airbag. The airbag is only held in with two small bolts on each side of the wheel. Disconnect the battery first, remove the airbag and then you can remove each switch by removing the two small phillips screws that hold it in. Pay attention to which way the bulb goes in though (it points away from you). The first time I did it, I put the pulb in so it was pointing up at me as I sat in the seat. That left a bump in the button from the bulb poking through. I had to R&R it again. When I removed my other switch to verify which way the bulb was supposed to go, the bulb in the other switch quit working when I put it back together so I had to use my spare (& R&R the other side). The first switch I tried doing without removing the airbag. The next three times I removed the airbag and spent less time during those three times than I did the first time without removing the airbag.

Thank you Tom. I appreciate it.

Very important that you disconnect the neg battery terminal before messing around with the airbag/horn module! You run the risk of deploying the airbag anytime you fool with it. It will even deploy without power to it. It has a failsafe feature that allows it to deploy if your car's power source is disabled. Disconnect the neg cable, wait about 3-4 minutes to override the failsafe, then you can safely remove the module. This is as serious as a heartattack! You could kill yourself if your face is down there trying to remove screws, etc.
