:(2003 ford explorer 4x4 cruise control has quit working, I changed the switch on top of the master cylinder with a used one it fixed the problem for about 2 months but now has stop working again. I put a jumper cable in the electrical contection going to the switch on top of the master cylinder, it brought the cruise control on again, but would not cruise at a steady speed, it kept speeding up. Its possible I didn't have a good conection with the jumper wire. Can you help me find the problem? thanks pdavies

My first thought would be that the used switch you bought is bad. That's the problem with buying used parts, you never know. :dunno:

I would recommend getting the switch at the dealer. From what I've read, they are around $20.

Good luck with the fix! :D:thumbsup:

A Weird Thing Happened To Me

This post is absolutely no help to the OP, but in my case, my cruise control would intermittently quit then some times it would work again. Finally, I had NO cruise control.

After about a year just for grins and giggles I tried to set my CC and it worked! It has worked for the past two years since without fail.

Go figure.

Maybe a bad connection. :dunno:

What is this switch above the master cylinder for ?

My cruise is acting up also, sometimes it works and sometimes it don't...

That switch is for the cruise control.

For those following this thread.

I had issues that would come and go until I took the switch off of the master cylinder and hosed it down with carb cleaner and WD-40.

I also tapped on the metal part of the switch and stuck the straw of the WD-40 can in the hole of the master cylinder where the switch goes and gave it a quick burst.

so far no issues...

thanks for the great info. my switch is black, shouldn't be a fire problem.

I'll try cleaning the switch next . I haven't bought a new switch yet in canada they want $68 what a rip off when I go down to Bellingham I will pick up a new switch from the ford dealer. Right now I'm going to take the old switch out and see if it has continuity and clean it. I'll post my findings tomorrow.

Well I took the switch out and tested it ,had continuity then i sprayed wd40 in the electrical plug in, and the contacts, sprayed the bottom orfice of the switch and wacked the heck out of the switch. Thanks for the cleaning tip. The cc is working again, for now.

well the cruise control quit again when i hit set button the symbol light in the dash comes on for a second and then goes out and doesn't set. how do you check the cc switches on the steering wheel?

did you get your cruise to work right yet?? If not Mine is doing the same thing but when it wont work i tap the brake (enough to where you feel it in the vehicle but not stomp on it) and then the cruise works right again for a little bit. i'm searching the forums to see if anyone else had this problem and deciding whether its the brake switch on the master cylinder.
