Cutting out/chugging

I have been having some problems. It was first when it would warm up, it would randomly start chugging...and/or cutting out. It would only last for about 5 seconds. I took my fuel pressure at idle and it was at 30, which used to be at 40. I replaced both fuel filters, spark plugs, cap, and rotor and there is still no difference. I found a vacuum leak on the tube that goes to the egr and I fixed it. I pulled the codes and they gave me system checks o.k. So, what should I look for and/or do?

Is there any smoke colour when it cuts out. Is there any weird smells. Does it smell like it is overfuelling. Is the engine harder on fuel lately. If you suspect a lack of fuel. Then find a long straight stretch and hold it to the floor. ( Preferably in the country with no traffic and children ) If it is starving it will start to cut out then. The sock in the fuel tank on the pump might be plugging up. This was how I diagnosed this problem on many chevy cavaliers before they came out with a tsb. Also remove the intake piping to the throttle plate. The butterfly needs to be clean and where it closes. You should remove the idle air control valve and check its operation. Check the air passage, it should be clean. You can do a simple test by running the engine with the IAC removed but still plugged in. The engine should rev high and the valve should fully extend. Then plug the air passage with your hand or rag, the valve should retract. It should move smoothly, not jerky. Hope this gives you some ideas. The more you check and eliminate the closer you will be to finding the answer! No scanner means lots of time consuming checks.

No, at least I haven't seen any. No, it feels o.k. I don't know about the fuel since I only drive it 4 miles a day. I would say it is about close. I will check the butterfly. I did remove the IAC and cleaned it. I unplugged it while it was running and did NOT make a difference. I am SURE it is supposed to, but others said it isn't supposed to change. Even though it was idling. Thanks
 






Exhaust is black, and I think I am getting poor gas mileage. I took the vacuum line off of the fpr and no fuel. Could it still be?

Faulty fuel pressure regulator ?
 






The vacuum line on the regulator is NOT full of gas. So, I am assuming it works fine. Not sure if a fuel pressure regulator could randomly cut out.

What else....any suggestions?
 






sounds like the temp sensor on your intake manifold. if its unpluged or being bypassed it will run your motor rich and that will result in black smoke. not sure just a suggestion. good luck!
 






Already tried that. Bought a new one and made no difference. What else? I have a bunch of codes?
 












Maybe the O2 sensors? that seemed to help me so much. also the fuel pump relay?
 






Both filters are new. And I tried 2 of my new relays and didn't help. I was told the egr, but I don't know how to test it. Thanks

has no clue sort of in the same bind myself with an 87 ranger
 






I see the first few threads were from a few yrs back , except the last one.... I had sorta the same problem once it was a faulty thermostat.... It never showed a code for it got the ole pass 11, from system.... Replaced the thermostat an it ran like brand new again ,, fuel mileage was better ,, no stalling out ....etc.
 






i have an 87 ranger reg cab 5-speed 2.9 that does the same exact thing i'll just be going down the road at 20-70% throttle and it acts like i cut the key off but i can left off and it will clear up or i can floor it and boom back to normal it doesnt do it 100% of the time but it is irritating also it seems to get real bad at night when im running my lights sometimes it will miss and other time it will cut completly out like i left it in gear goin down the road and cut the key off i just wonder if it has anything to do with the alt. or coil or perhaps the ecm since its not just mine that does it
 






I sold the ranger so I have no idea what the problem was. Although I did buy an '86 2.3l 4x4 Ranger that I'm doing a SAS on and turbo.:) Although this was my first truck and for some reason I liked it so much...it was junk. The wires were coming apart. All the electronics were crap.
