Recently, the light bulb behind the Gas Gauge had burnt out...or so I thought ('98 XLT Explorer). Tonight as I was driving, I noticed that it was bright and vibrant.

It seems to turn on and off every now and then. Usually, it stays off, but it turns on when I least expect it. I thought the light was burnt out, and was about to replace it, but if it were burnt out, it wouldn't turn on at all, right?.

Is this caused by faulty wiring or something? No other places on the dashboard are burnt out or suffering from this problem. Any ideas? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Sounds like the contacts in the bulb holder are a little loose. Try closing them up a bit with a screwdriver or long nose pliers etc.
